Poll: plant-based meat and other new food trends
Hello from SurveyMonkey!
Welcome to the latest installment of our research newsletter. This week, Austin is back to share exclusive, international data on grocery and food trends among Americans, Dutch, British and French adults. Plus, see which country is most keen on plant-based alternatives. Read on to learn more!
But first, as always, we wanted to shout out some of our research data in the news and on our blog. We partnered with AAPI Data to field a nationwide survey of more than 16K people in the U.S., with an oversample of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI), timed to the one-year anniversary of the Atlanta spa killings. These new data reveal that hate crimes against AAPIs remain a serious issue and that Asian Americans are not alone in experiences of hate violence. Read the full story in our blog post and in a blog post from the AAPI Data team.
Grocery supply chain issues more prevalent in the U.S and U.K.
U.S. and U.K. grocery shoppers have noticed a shortage of grocery items at far greater rates than France and the Netherlands according to a new SurveyMonkey poll fielded among about 4,000 people across four countries.
Among U.S. shoppers who’ve noticed grocery shortages in the last three months, more than half say they’ve noticed a shortage of meat or eggs (57%) and toilet paper/paper towels (56%), though just 26% say they’ve noticed a shortage of avocados.
Grocery delivery used by 4 in 10 adults on average
Over 4 in 10 (44%) adults in the Netherlands have used a grocery delivery service in the past three months, more than France (37%), U.S. (39%), and the U.K. (40%).
Younger adults in all countries are opting for grocery delivery at much higher rates than older age groups. In the U.S., for example, 66% of 18-34 year olds, 34% of 35-54 year olds, and only 11% of those 65+ have used grocery delivery in the past three months.
Convenience is the top reason why people are choosing to use online delivery services, regardless of location, yet it’s more important for some than others. In France, 67% say convenience is the primary reason for using a grocery delivery service, compared with 61% of Dutch, 59% of Brits and 46% of Americans.
Plant based meat has a strong presence in the Netherlands
Adults in the Netherlands are most likely to have tried plant based meat: 70% of Dutch adults say they have tried it, compared with 63% of Brits, 58% of Americans and 55% of French.
The Dutch are also eating plant-based meat more frequently with nearly half (47%) of those that have eating it at least once a week, far greater than those in the U.S. (25%), UK (35%) and France (30%).
Among those that have not tried plant-based meat, around 1 in 3 in each country say they would be interested in trying it, with the most interest in the U.S. (37%). Nevertheless, the majority of those who have not tried plant-based meat still don’t plan to try it (63% in the U.S., 67% in the U.K, 72% in NL, and 65% in France).
