January 6th hearings ⚖️
Hello from SurveyMonkey! In this week’s newsletter, Austin is back with an exclusive deep dive on Americans’ opinions of the January 6th hearings. But first, as always, here’s a quick recap of our data in the news and on our blog:
Consumer confidence sinks, hitting new all-time low: in the latest NYT|Momentive poll, the Consumer Confidence Index plummets to its lowest score yet in the five years of our polling with the NYT, a score of 33 out of a possible 100. Inflation remains top of mind as 92% say they’re concerned about inflation and a full 70% are “very concerned” (up from 63% in April). Check out the coverage.
Americans sour on crypto: a new Momentive poll shows most Americans are shying away from investing in crypto, as 43% think it is too risky to buy, and a similar percentage (42%) are unsure. Just 13% say now is a good time to buy crypto. Yet, current investors hold a slightly different view: The majority (59%) plan on holding onto their crypto investments in the next six months, while more than one in four (27%) expect to buy. Majority of Americans support House investigation into January 6th events
More than half (58%) of Americans support the investigation led by the U.S. House of Representatives in the January 6th attack on the U.S. Capitol according to a new SurveyMonkey poll, conducted June 24 -June 27. Almost all Democrats (89%) support the investigation with 74% saying they strongly support it. Most Republicans (71%) oppose the investigation, including 47% who say they strongly oppose it.
Nearly half of Americans have been following the coverage of January 6th hearings
The media coverage of the January 6th hearings has been extensive, and over 4 in 10 (45%) Americans have been following the coverage very or somewhat closely. Republicans are least likely to be following the coverage (27%) while Democrats are following it the most (69%), even though both Republicans and Democrats say they closely follow overall news about politics equally (45% and 47% respectively).
The majority of likely voters in the coming midterm elections support the January 6th investigation
Among likely voters (registered voters who say they are absolutely certain or probably will vote in the upcoming November elections), 60% say they support the investigation, including nearly half (47%) who strongly support it.
Other polls in the news on January 6th hearings
A recent Yahoo News/YouGov Poll finds 52% of Americans believe the Department of Justice should prosecute former President Donald Trump for his role in the events.
A recent CBS/YouGov poll shows that 47% of respondents said they have been paying some or a lot of attention to the hearings.
