Majority support NYC’s Earth Day plans for their own neighborhood
To celebrate Earth Day this year, 100 streets across New York City will go car-free. A majority of adults in the U.S. (69%) say they’d like to see car-free streets where they live, too.
Young adults are particularly keen: 78% of Gen-Z and 74% of Millennials say they’d support this plan in their own neighborhood vs. 67% of Gen-X, 63% of Boomers and 54% of the Silent Generation.
Yet, opposition runs high among Republicans: 53% say they’d oppose this plan in their neighborhood – five times as high as Democrats (10%). Those living in urban areas are far more likely to support this plan (80%) vs. suburbanites (68%) and ruralites (60%)
Democrats care the most about the environment
The overwhelming majority of adults (78%) say they’re concerned about environmental pollution, including 43% who are “very concerned.”
Almost all (94%) Democrats are concerned about environmental pollution, the highest of any group. In comparison, just 60% of Republicans and 84% of independents say the same.
