2022 Midterm Elections 🗳
Hello from SurveyMonkey!
We are four days away from Election Day here in the U.S. If you are hooked on election data, make sure to check out our 2022 Elections Hub.
This week, we announced our partnership with the University of Pennsylvania’s Penn Program on Opinion Research and Election Studies, for which we are surveying more than 300,000 people across the country in the lead-up to the election. Check out some of the coverage:
Voters in battleground states eye Republican House candidates over Democrats: Nationally, Republicans and Democrats are neck-and-neck in the generic ballot House race, yet Republicans take the lead in several key battleground states. Check out the full story here.
Bipartisan support for abortion exemptions remains in Post-Roe America: 86% of Americans think a pregnant woman should be able to legally have an abortion if she becomes pregnant because of rape or incest. Read the story here.
Biden’s approval rating underwater in nearly all states
For most of Joe Biden’s presidency, more Americans have disapproved than have approved of the job he is doing. As of this month, there are only five states (Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and California), plus Washington D.C. in which Biden’s approval is above water. The dashboard here compiles SurveyMonkey’s own tracking data from the beginning of Biden’s Presidency in January of 2021.
Biden’s approval rating is especially low in some key battleground states: just 37% approve of Biden’s job performance in Nevada, along with 37% in Ohio, 40% in Pennsylvania and 41% in Arizona.
Abortion remains top of mind ahead of elections
An overwhelming majority of Americans (81%) say the issue of abortion is important to their vote – with 57% saying it’s “very important”. Nearly all women (87%) say the issue of abortion is important to their vote, compared with 71% of males. Women are nearly twice as likely as men to say “abortion” is the issue that matters most to them right now (20% vs. 10%).
Democrats are far more likely than Republicans to place weight on the issue of abortion ahead of the midterm elections: 90% of Democrats say the issue of abortion is important to their vote, with 72% saying it’s “very important”. In comparison, 74% of Republicans and 78% of independents say the same.
While abortion still remains a key issue at the ballot for nearly all political parties, Republicans are hyper-focused on the economy: 57% say “inflation” is the issue that matters most to them right now while just 41% of independents and even fewer (20%) Democrats say the same.
That’s all for this week! Thanks as always for reading and check out our Election Insights landing page for even more!
